Tanning Addiction

Tanning addiction, also known as tanorexia, involves a compulsive need to tan, either through sun exposure or tanning beds. Signs include feeling anxious when unable to tan, tanning despite skin damage, and believing one is never tan enough.

While there isn't a large organization specifically for tanning addiction, body dysmorphic disorder support groups or general addiction support groups can be helpful.

Treatment often involves cognitive-behavioral therapy to address body image issues and develop healthier behaviors. Education about skin cancer risks and alternatives to tanning (like self-tanners) can be part of recovery. Some find mindfulness techniques helpful in managing urges to tan.
